Your Guide To Wedding Dress Silhouettes

You just got engaged and you are ready to start planning your wedding! As a new bride-to-be, one of the first things you do is start looking at wedding dresses!

Let's Get Started!

Your Pinterest board has become a reality! There are so many gorgeous options to choose from. It all can seem a bit overwhelming when you first begin.

Where do you start? The pictures look stunning, but how do you know what you like? The more you look, the more your head begins to swirl. It is easy to feel overwhelmed with all of the jargon and terms being thrown around. What is the difference between a ballgown and an A-line? What does sheath even mean?

Shopping for a bridal gown can be extremely overwhelming, especially since there are so many beautiful options to choose from! Every bride is unique and looking for a gown that is just as unique as you can seem like a daunting decision.

The first step to narrow down your decision is to focus on the silhouette of your desired dress. Choosing the right silhouette can emphasize your body’s best features. We put together a silhouette guide to explain the styles you will come across once you begin shopping!

We want you to find the PERFECT dress for your perfect day.

Ballgown

This silhouette, also known as the “princess” dress, is known for its fitted bodice that hits at the natural waistline and has a full skirt. The ballgown shape is ideal for many body types. Since this fit hits at the natural waistline, it highlights the tiniest part of the waist. Many brides fall in love with this silhouette just for that reason! Most ballgown dresses include layers of tulle and usually include crinoline, a type of underskirt, to enhance the fullness of the dress.

A-Line

The A-line silhouette features a fitted bodice through the waist and flows naturally to the floor. The gown gives the shape of an “A,” which is where this shape gets its name. The top of this silhouette fits much like a ballgown, but the skirt has less body. This style is known to be universally flattering, and for that reason, it has become one of the most popular choices for our brides!

Sheath

The sheath silhouette is simple and sophisticated. This style has a formfitting cut that fits through the bust, waist, and hips to elongate a bride’s silhouette. The cut of this dress allows for more movement and works well with almost any type of fabric- including beading, lace, satin, and crepe! This is the perfect silhouette for brides that want to show off their curves!

Fit and Flare

This silhouette is perfect for brides who want a fitted dress, but don’t want to commit to the mermaid style. A fit and flare gown hugs the body through the bust and waist. It is fitted through the hips and thighs, then flares out above the knee- giving your legs a bit more freedom and movement.

Mermaid

The mermaid silhouette is sexy and a showstopper. This silhouette is fitted through the bust, waist, hips, and thighs. The gown flares out below the knee. The mermaid gown accentuates curves and creates a beautiful hourglass shape. Mermaid gowns usually include beading, ruching, or ruffles to take the dress to the next level!
